A spatial design concept for the Glaubten Specialized Hospital for Social Medicine and Addiction Disorders combines philosophy, identity, and history. It encompasses the specialized hospital, the addiction-accepting Schärme residential facility, and the administrative office—all located in the same building—and creates a unified design language across all areas.People are at the center of it all. The design conveys a sense of orientation, security, and appreciation, bringing the institution’s social and medical ethos to life in everyday life. At the same time, it takes into account the different requirements of the individual spaces—from treatment and residential areas to the staff’s workspaces. The concept builds on the legacy of Pastor Ernst Sieber and strengthens the identity of the site. This creates an environment that fosters trust and makes the institution’s unique mission spatially visible.

Orientation, History, and Attitude

The project began with numerous conversations, personal memories, and historical materials. This led to the creation of a curated collection of quotes, photographs, and narrative elements that guides visitors and staff through the foundation’s history. The wall displays provide orientation, convey the foundation’s values, and bring defining moments in its history to life in everyday settings.

Special attention was paid to presenting the content in a respectful and authentic manner. The design was intended not to dramatize, but to document, commemorate, and connect. The result is a spatial narrative that links the past and the present.

The installations were created using high-quality printed films and traditional paste-up wallpaper. The variety of materials lends the spaces a vibrant and tactile quality and underscores the documentary nature of the project.

Soda developed the wall design for the Glaubten site with great professionalism and a keen sense of human connection. They succeeded in incorporating the early work of Pastor Ernst Sieber and the foundation’s history into the design in a striking way. The result is a visual identity that fosters a sense of connection and brings the values of the Sozialwerk to life in a contemporary way. — Friederike Rass, Executive Director, Pastor Sieber Social Welfare Foundation
