What is it like to experience a podcast not on a smartphone, but as a physical object in a room? For the podcast producer RefLab, we explored this question and developed a podcast station that transforms digital listening into an analog experience.

From the initial concept and design, through the deliberate simplification of functionality, prototyping, and product design, to in-house implementation via 3D printing, integration of hardware components, and programming of the user interface, a functional pilot series was created that is in use today.

A bespoke installation that blends technology and ambiance. The Station doesn’t just make content accessible; it brings it to life—through a deliberately minimalist interface and clear, intuitive controls that are a joy to use.

Challenge – Radical Reduction

The station was designed for use at trade shows and conferences. The goal was to create a device that works intuitively and immediately invites users to explore it. All functions are controlled via a single rotary knob. New content is automatically synchronized, while the device can still be used entirely offline. It is portable, durable, and deliberately streamlined to the essentials.

Bringing podcasts to life

The design language combines warmth with technical precision. Its geometry is clean, and its interface is understated. Placed next to an armchair or in a public space, it creates a quiet moment for listening. The navigation is deliberately simple, visually minimalist, and intuitive. The color scheme and branding also make the station a standalone brand asset for RefLab.

Making audio visible

An integrated ferrofluid element reacts to the voices and frequencies in the podcasts. The magnetic fluid moves in sync with the content, adding a physical dimension to the listening experience. A hypnotic visual anchor that bridges technology, atmosphere, and content.
